  • Step 1.:  Ok.  Where do you begin?  This is a big job for so little time.  We will break it up into individual small jobs that each group member will work on by him/herself.  But before we decide on your individual roles you must first learn a working definition of sustainable development.  Check out these links to find this information.  You will need to keep a journal with notes on any information you find and sources for the information.  You will use this journal throughout the web quest to record the information as you find it.  The web addresses from the WebQuest will need to be recorded for each question answered.

  •  Step 2: So what are the basic needs to sustain life?  Do you really need that new CD?  Or how about that new pair of designer sneakers? Part of the problem is most of us in the developed countries have become so far removed from just the basic necessities to sustain human life that we take for granted that it will always be there.  Check out the figures in each of these frames to see some of the discrepancies between developed and developing countries. Follow this link. We need food, we need water, we need clothing, we need shelter, and we need fuel to cook our food and to provide warmth to sustain our body temperature.  But we want so much more.  And much of this consumption is contributing to the destruction of our environment.  Read and listen to this radio broadcast to get an idea of the impact that our spending habits can have on the environment.  Don't forget to record information as you find it.  Your information can also include personal responses showing how you feel about the information:

  • Step 3:  It is urgent that you begin your discovery of the ways you can personally contribute to saving the natural resources. Now is the time for your teacher to divide your group into your individual roles.  Once you have your role you can click on the link to see what your individual task will be.
Environmentalist
Environmental Engineer

Air Quality Specialist

  • Step 4:  Now it is time for you to meet with other members of your role to share information that you have found.  Don’t forget that you need to also share the source of your information.
  •  Step 5:  It is time to regroup to plan how you will prepare a presentation to show to the rulers of the new planet.  Remember to refer back to the task to review what you are to presnet to the planet's rulers. Some suggestions will be at this link:

  • Evaluation:  A link to a rubric is available so you can see the ways the teacher is evaluating you.
