Raymond K. Broderick, Principal

Welcome students, families and friends of Westfield High School,
which is the second largest high school in Western Massachusetts.

Our school not only offers students challenging and varied courses of studies but also offers an education that reaches far beyond the walls of this institution. Satisfying and useful experiences may be found in the variety of activities, programs, social, cultural and artistic events that are part of life at Westfield High School.

In addition to the required areas of learning, we participate in a Dual Enrollment Program with area colleges and offer an honors' program for those who meet the requirements. The Child Development Program, with an on site pre-school classroom, gives our students the hands on experience they need in the field of child care. Industrial and graphic arts classes, as well as photography, add greatly to the well-rounded curriculum designed to meet the needs of all students. Our technology program gives students an opportunity to become computer literate which will enable them to compete in the world of computer technology. The Westfield High School Library provides students with print and online resources needed for school-related projects. Library staff assists students in the research process and teaches the information literacy skills necessary for successful learning.

The John E. Reed Career Center assists all students in planning their future through career development, individual goal setting, and the recognition of the values of academic, social, and occupational skills. This information is based on the students' interests, abilities, values, and experiences. With an awareness of the world of work, this center provides career, college, and school-to-work activities in conjunction with our diverse business community.

The staff consists of dedicated educators whose primary goal is to offer the students every opportunity to learn. Guidance counselors and support staff, a psychologist, adjustment counselors, and special education teachers round out the complete family that make up the Westfield High School faculty.

In addition to the academics, we offer numerous extra-curricular activities at all levels. Interscholastic as well as intramural sports activities are offered for both males and females. Art, music, the school newspaper, a drama society and subject matter clubs are also available.

We participate in the Renaissance Program which promotes academic excellence and good attendance. Recognition for achievement is positive and tangible thus encouraging all students to strive towards this goal.

Parental interest and participation are an important ingredient of Westfield High School life. Parents may become a part of their child's education by becoming members of the PAC (Parent Advisory Council). The PAC is a group of individuals who meet once a month to discuss the activities of the school. Parents may also run for a seat on the School Council. The council is a body of parents, teachers, and members of the business community who along with the school principal, set goals and objectives for the betterment of Westfield High School. Parental involvement is encouraged and is vital for the development and ultimate success of well-rounded students.

High school prepares our teenagers to become responsible adults who will deal with real life situations in appropriate ways. The mission of Westfield High School is to contribute to the ongoing processes of developing knowledge, skills and attitudes that will enable students to maximize their academic, occupational, personal, and societal potential.

Westfield High School Vision Statement

The Vision Statement seeks to establish a clear understanding of the direction in which the school is taking its students.

Westfield High School provides comprehensive educational opportunities for students to realize their full academic, occupational, societal and personal potential. Each student will discover his or her individual strengths and interests and will learn to expand these in an academic setting that regularly assesses and focuses on student outcomes. Above and beyond the required courses, our students will be offered a wide variety of elective course opportunities for exploration and the pursuit of individual interests as well as career interests.

Support for each other's learning will create a community of learners both at the student and staff levels. Students will be allowed a greater choice of studies while promoting a more personalized learning environment. Shared decision-making and a collaborative professional environment will improve student learning. Scheduling of common planning time will reduce teacher isolation, promote a collegian school culture, and foster the creation of a more integrated curriculum.

We believe in developing an independent, well-rounded student who has a positive attitude about his/her future and has developed a life long love of learning. Our students will have a fundamental respect for all diversities that individuals bring to the educational community. Furthermore, a strong bond of confidence and trust will exist between our students and faculty. Within the structure of our interscholastic and recreational sports programs, our students will learn the principles of fair play, good sportsmanship, teamwork, and respect for rules and authority and will apply these lessons to other aspects of their lives. Extracurricular activities will aid in achieving personal growth outside the classroom with particular emphasis on enhancing decision-making skills and concern for others through giving of self and sharing. Increased school-community involvement will teach our students leadership skills, how to become involved, to take personal responsibility, to pursue new interests, and to take pride in their community. In so doing, a clear sense of social responsibility and citizenship will develop.

Clear and open communication between the school and parents will encourage all parents and guardians of Westfield High School students to become actively involved in promoting a positive, well balanced system.
The Westfield High School is committed to educating the whole child by involving all dimensions of growth with challenging academics and by furthering his/her interests, broadening perceptions, developing new skills and renewing the enjoyment of learning. The school community has a shared vision of high expectations for all students. We seek to provide a diverse and enhanced educational environment available to all students who recognize their own unique potential as individuals striving for knowledge and achievement.
