Second year French uses an interactive approach to expand the basic skills learned in French I. Students will be actively involved in proficiency-based exercises to build communicative competence. New tenses and grammatical concepts are presented as well as cultural aspects of France and French - speaking countries.

Continue to develop your language skills through activities that focus on meaningful, personal communication in more sophisticated situations and interactions. Advanced vocabulary, expressions, and grammar will help you to communicate more effectively. A variety of literary, journalistic and cultural passages will increase your understanding and appreciation of France, its language, and French-speaking people.

This honors course focuses on the history and literature of France. Learn how the events of French history and the accomplishments of the French people have influenced the development of the country and its culture. Strong emphasis is placed on speaking, aural comprehension, and vocabulary building. Grammar is reviewed in context.

The fifth year of French is an AP course intended for the advanced, highly motivated student. Reading and analysis of full-length literary or philosophical works, intensive conversational practice, and a review of the finer points of grammar and idiomatic expression are the main points of emphasis.

Learn the German language, while learning about its young people, old traditions, and the "New Germany" using an up-to-date, multi-faceted, and comprehensive language program including an integrated video. Cooperative learning techniques incorporated in a communicative context form the core of the program. Particular emphasis is placed on Listening Comprehension and evaluation of this skill. Cultural and geographical information is introduced in German from the early stages.

This course is a continuation of German I with an emphasis on speaking and listening comprehension and a reinforcement and expansion of reading and writing skills acquired in the first year.

The third year marks the beginning of advanced language study. Strong emphasis is placed on speaking, grammar review, and vocabulary building. Short literary texts will be introduced and oral presentations on a variety of topics will be required. Evaluated on an individual basis, you will have a good opportunity to reinforce your reading, writing, and speaking skills.

This honors course is a continuation of the advanced language study begun in the third year. Attention is given to grammar review and vocabulary building, with a particularly strong emphasis on advanced listening comprehension and reading discussing German literary and technical texts in their original form. As always, the speaking skills will be reinforced. As an advanced student, you will have the opportunity to participate in discussions, working to perfecting all your language skills for use in global economy.

This course is designed to meet the needs of the students participating in the German American Partnership Program (GAPP) - WHS' biennial school exchange with a German academic high school - "Gymnasium". It will offer the opportunity for intensive language practice in the framework of an in-depth analysis of contemporary culture, politics, and society in present-day Germany. Students will attend preparation meetings at WHS prior to departure and attend daily classes at Europa-Gymnasium in Worth am Rhein (our partner school). They will be responsible for completing daily assignments, and three short papers on individual topics related to contemporary Germany. The course framework will serve to enhance the global awareness and language proficiency of the participants while living with German host families and attending school.

FL1213 Spanish I

In this course, students will learn to speak, read, write and comprehend spoken Spanish, while becoming familiar with various aspects of Hispanic culture and life. Live action videos are integrated with the text to reinforce vocabulary, grammar, and culture. Students will have opportunities to apply what they learn to their own lives through pair work and cooperative learning.

Spanish III gives the student a thorough review of the grammar studied in the previous two years with particular attention to verb tenses. Students are exposed to short literary works in Spanish. Opportunities for oral and written expression are provided through exercises and group work.

The fourth year of Spanish is an honors course in which an intensive study is made of renowned and representative Spanish and Spanish-American writers. Grammar is studied mainly through context and through specific item review. The course is taught in Spanish. Opportunities will be made available for students to present both written and oral original work.

This course is designed as an introduction to the ancient Romans and their language. Students will learn the grammar and structure of Latin, and develop an appreciation of the influence of the Roman civilization on the world today. Students will expand their English vocabulary through the study of Latin root words.

In Latin II, students will expand on the skills learned in Latin I. New grammatical concepts as well as vocabulary will be presented. Students will continue the study of ancient Roman civilization.

In Latin III, students will study advanced grammar and vocabulary. They will continue to explore ancient Roman civilization and its influence on today’s world. Some elements of the ancient Greek language and culture will be included.

The fourth year of Latin is an Honors course in which students will continue their study of the ancient Roman civilization and its influence on today’s world. Students will be introduced to authentic selections of Latin poetry and literature.
