A Homework Guide for Parents from the Office of Curriculum/Instruction Amount and Frequency Middle School (Grades 6-8) Types of Homework Preparation homework is intended to provide background information. These assignments may include readings in the class text, library researcg, collecting materials for a class presentation, or other activities that require the organization of information before a class discussion or demonstration. Practice homework reinforces newly acquired skills or knowledge. These assignments are most effective when carefully evaluated by the teacher, when matched to the ability and background of the individual students, and when students are asked to apply recent learning to their own life experiences. Extension homework guides students so they expand on concepts that were taught in class. These assignments are often long-term, continuting projects that parallel classwork and require students to apply previous knowledge. Higher level homework includes analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. This type of homework is inventive and resourceful. Students produce their own ideas related to a class topic and then share those ideas in class.
