WELCOME TO MS. FARRIS' KINDERGARTEN CLASS

Dear Parents:

Welcome to Munger Hill Elementary School!  I am looking forward to working with you and your child throughout this coming school year.  Below is information I hope you will find helpful.

Book Bags:
To ensure that all school papers and notices make it home, any type of bag big enough to hold a library book and a folder will be needed.  Many children choose to use a backpack.

Student Folders: I will provide each student with a two pocket folder that should go back and forth to school each day.  The children will put important notices for you in these folders, and I will check the folders each morning for correspondence from you.  Lunch and milk money should also be placed in these folders.

Drop Off and Pick Up:
For those of you bringing your child to school, please bring your child to the kindergarten entrance by the playscape between 8:45 and 9:00 a.m.  At 3:00 p.m., children who are picked up by parents will be dismissed at our back door into your care.  Walkers are not allowed to ride the bus.

Notes:  A note is required if there will be a change in the way your child usually goes home (i.e., being picked up rather than taking the bus or someone different picking up that day.)  Notes are also required when a child returns to school from an absence.

Snack:  The children will have a snack each day.  I am asking that each child bring in a snack and a drink of their choice daily.  If a child doesn't bring a drink, they may use the water fountain in our classroom.

Lunch:
Your child can bring a lunch from home.  That "cold lunch" can have a drink included with it or your child can purchase a carton of milk for $0.45.  Your child can also buy a "hot lunch" which includes a milk carton for $1.85.   Please use an envelope for hot lunch or milk money and write your child's name on the outside.

Rest Towels:  Please have your child bring in a regular-sized bath towel for rest time.  This towel will stay at school.  I will send them home periodically for laundering.  Please do not send in beach towels or large blankets.

Name Tags:  Please have your child wear his or her name tag for the first week of school.  At the end of the week, I will collect the tags so that we can use them at a later date.

Mystery Bag:  Each week we will focus on a different letter of the alphabet.  Mondays will be Mystery Bag Day.  Your child will be asked to bring in an item that begins with the selected letter, hidden inside a brown bag that I will provide.  Your child will also prepare three clues about the object.  The class will then try to guess what is in each Mystery Bag.  We will start this activity in a few weeks.

Take Home Activities:  I will be sending home some fun activities for you to do with your child that correlate with what we are learning about in school.  Please work with your child to complete these activities and then return the materials to school.

Newsletters:  I will be writing a newsletter each week that will highlight the week's events.  These newsletters will be in your child's folder each Friday.

Birthday Treats:  If you would like to celebrate your child's special day, please feel free to send in a special snack.  These can come into the classroom before the day starts or dropped off in the office.  We will arrange a time at the end of the year for those children who have summer birthdays to do the same if so desired.

Party Invitations:  Please do not send party invitations to school unless you are inviting the entire class. This will prevent hurting the feelings of those children not invited.  I can provide you with a class list of first names, but I am not allowed to distribute addresses.

Attendance:  After each absence, a note is required when your child returns to school.  Our district health policy for strep throat and pink eye is that the child needs to be on antibiotics for a full 48 hours before returning to school.

Parking:  Please do not park in the circle when dropping off or picking up your child.  This is a busy time for our school.  Buses need free access to that area.

Schedule for Centers:  Once we begin centers, I will send home a schedule for the classroom volunteers.  Please let me know if you don't want your phone number published on this list. (Phone numbers help, though, if you need to cancel as you will have those phone numbers to help you find a replacement.)

Visiting the School:  If you are coming into the building during school hours, you must register in the office and obtain a visitor's badge.

Classroom Café:  Each week we will prepare a recipe as a part of our Workboard time.  The recipe is usually connected to our week's phonics work or tied into our theme.  I am asking that each child send in $2.00 per month, at the beginning of each month, to help defray the costs of these projects.  Please use an envelope with your child's name written on the outside.  If you so desire, you can also send in $20.00 in September to cover the entire school year.  The children love this activity!  I appreciate your help in making it possible!

Please let me know if you have questions about the above information, or any other topic related to our classroom or school.

 Thank you!
