Welcome
to Mrs. Foint’s Kindergarten Class!
The “first day of school” is a
great milestone for your child. I understand that
you and your child may have met this day with excitement
or apprehension (or a little of both). I hope that
this letter will help you to know what to expect in kindergarten
this year, and answer any questions you may have.
I would like to take this time to introduce myself. My
name is Sara Foint. For the past three years I taught
special education at Moseley School in Westfield. When
Moseley closed and I was offered to teach kindergarten at
Highland, I don’t think I could have been any more
excited!
Important Information
- Changes
in Transportation
If you plan to pick up a child who normally rides the
bus, or if your child is going home with someone they
do not usually go home with, you must send a written note
to me that morning.
If we do not receive a written note or a phone call before
2:30, then I must send your child home by his/her usual
mode of transportation. Please don’t expect your
Kindergartener to relay this information to us. Please
send it in a note instead! Also, an adult must be at the
bus stop to pick up your child or the bus driver will
not release the child.
- Illness
The question of when to keep your child home from school
is often a difficult one, especially when decisions must
be made first thing in the morning. It is very important
to keep your child home if he/she is ill. Keeping your
child home helps to make them more comfortable, and prevents
others in our school and classroom from becoming ill and
missing school. If your child does have an illness, please
let the school know right away (572-6428).
- Recess
We will go outside everyday weather permitting. Please
make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the
weather. It is also extremely important to have
your child’s shoes, coats, gloves, hats, snow pants,
boots, and other clothing items labeled. It saves time
and hurt feelings when something accidentally becomes
misplaced or turned into lost and found.
- Birthdays
Birthdays are special occasions for young children. We
are happy to celebrate birthdays during snack time. If
you wish, you may send a special treat with your child
on that day. Please try to send napkins, plates, plastic
ware or anything else we may need in order to have your
child’s special treat! Please send a note or call
in advance if you wish to do this, so that I may inform
you of the number of students in our class (we currently
have 23). We will also celebrate summer birthdays in June.
This way everyone will get a chance to celebrate their
birthday at school. Please do not send birthday invitations
to school to be handed out unless the whole class is invited.
This saves hurt feelings that may arise if some children
are not invited.
- Lunch
Money
Enclosed in your folder you will find the school lunch
calendar. School lunch costs 1.85 and breakfast
costs .60. Your child may be eligible for free or reduced
lunch. Reduced price is 20¢ for breakfast and 40¢
for lunch. Please put any lunch money in an envelope
and label with child’s name.
- Snack
We will have a snack two times a day; one in the morning
and one in the afternoon. It’d be greatly
appreciated if everyone could send in a healthy snack
throughout the year (enough for 23 students). Some
healthy suggestions include:
- Cereal (without
milk)
- Cereal bars
- Individual applesauce
cups(plastic spoons)
- Pudding (plastic
spoons)
- Crackers (Goldfish,
Saltines, Ritz, etc.)
- Pretzels
- Fruit cups that
do not require refrigeration (plastic spoons/forks)
- Raisins
- Granola bars
- Fruit (apples, oranges,
bananas)
- Gummy fruit snacks
(made from 100% fruit juice with no sugar added)
- *Please refrain
from sending in anything with peanut butter/nuts in case
of allergies
- Rest
time
The kindergarten day gets long for many students and I
would like to give them 15 minutes of rest time each day
after lunch. This will be time when the students
will be assigned a spot in the room to lay quietly and
rest. Please send in a small blanket or bath towel for
your child to rest on. They will be sent home periodically
to be washed. Please do not send a pillow for your
child to rest on; there is simply no room to store them.
- Change
of Clothes
Please send in a change of clothes for your child in case
of an accident. Please label the bag with his or her name.
- Specials
Monday- Technology
Tuesday- Music and Library
Wednesday- Art
Thursday- Health
Friday- Physical Education (CHILD
MUST WEAR SNEAKERS TODAY)
- Supplies
Supplies are limited at our school and we run out of many
things. For the beginning of the school year we are asking
each of you to please send in:
• 6 Glue Sticks
• Hand Sanitizer (in the
pumps)
• Large package of hand
wipes
• A box of Crayola Crayons
• A package of Crayola
Markers
• 1 Box of Kleenex
• Small blanket/towel for
rest
• Change of clothes in
a bag (labeled with child’s name)
• 1 folder with two pockets
for notices home, homework, notes from the teacher, etc(feel
free to use this one).
• 1 Backpack
**It is very important
that you go through your child’s backpack/folder every
evening. Homework/artwork that has been checked by
the teacher should be removed from the bag and left at home.
**
Last but not
least, we ask that you read to your child as often as possible
(hopefully every day). aloud with young children strengthens
relationships, encourages listening and language skills,
promotes attention and curiosity, and establishes a
strong reading foundation. Not only is this time
enjoyable, but they learn that reading is important to you
too. The Westfield Athenaeum has a wonderful selection
of books for you and your children and there is no cost
to use it.
I’m looking forward
to an exciting year ahead! Please feel free to call
me anytime a question may arise. 572-6428
