Our
January book of the month is titled "The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush."
Little Gopher wasn't like the other children, but because he was patient,
persistent, and determined, he discovered his special talent that will
always be remembered. Many fascinating people throughout history have had similar challenges. Like Little Gopher, they had to overcome obstacles with determination, perseverance, and persistence. Many achieved their dreams and left legacies to inspire us all. Mrs. Wysocki's fourth grade students will select autobiographies and biographies and explore the values of perseverance, fortitude, and resolve of famous characters. The children will take notes and use graphic organizers as they read to write their own scripts and become their famous character. A "Famous February Reader's Theater" will culminate this project with presentations sure to be a treat for invited guests. Mrs. DiSanto's fourth graders are also reading, taking notes, and using graphic organizers to write reports about Martin Luther King, Jr., George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln. These famous Americans, remembered each year at this time, are wonderful role models of those who showed perseverance, resolve, fortitude, and determination to achieve their goals. The students have also written their own "legacies" as to how they've helped and will continue to help their Highland School community. Perhaps you've read about an amazing young woman from Westfield? Kacey Bellamy is a dedicated athlete who will play hockey for team U.S.A. in the upcoming Vancouver Olympics. Representing our country has always been a dream for Kacey. Through her efforts, sacrifices, determination and perseverance- like Little Gopher in our story, and famous Americans- the Olympic gold is within her reach. After her Olympic experience ends, Kacey will visit students in grades 4 and 5 at Highland. She'll share her inspiring story that has helped her become a local role model and legend for every female hockey player in Westfield and beyond, as well as for all children who have dreams! |
