Our January book of the month is titled "The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush." Little Gopher wasn't like the other children, but because he was patient, persistent, and determined, he discovered his special talent that will always be remembered.
Many fascinating people throughout history have had similar challenges. Like Little Gopher, they had to overcome obstacles with determination, perseverance, and persistence. Many achieved their dreams and left legacies to inspire us all.
Mrs. Wysocki's fourth grade students will select autobiographies and biographies and explore the values of perseverance, fortitude, and resolve of famous characters. The children will take notes and use graphic organizers as they read to write their own scripts and become their famous character. A "Famous February Reader's Theater" will culminate this project with presentations sure to be a treat for invited guests.
Mrs. DiSanto's fourth graders are also reading, taking notes, and using graphic organizers to write reports about Martin Luther King, Jr., George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln. These famous Americans, remembered each year at this time, are wonderful role models of those who showed perseverance, resolve, fortitude, and determination to achieve their goals. The students have also written their own "legacies" as to how they've helped and will continue to help their Highland School community.
Perhaps you've read about an amazing young woman from Westfield? Kacey Bellamy is a dedicated athlete who will play hockey for team U.S.A. in the upcoming Vancouver Olympics. Representing our country has always been a dream for Kacey. Through her efforts, sacrifices, determination and perseverance- like Little Gopher in our story, and famous Americans- the Olympic gold is within her reach. After her Olympic experience ends, Kacey will visit students in grades 4 and 5 at Highland. She'll share her inspiring story that has helped her become a local role model and legend for
every female hockey player in Westfield and beyond, as well as for all children who have dreams!

Legacy

I am going to help Highland School by recycling.I am recycling already. I am doing recycling by recycling scrap paper and extras too. I am making Highland School a better place for kids, teachers and staff. The best thing about recycling is that you get to reuse things. Also you can save the earth. I will recycle all the papers I do not need.
I will try to get the school to recycle. I think they are already doing it. I can make Highland School a better place because I am recycling.

My Legacy

When I leave Highland Elementry School people might remember me for participating in fund raisers like Reach For The Stars, or maybe donating money to the Haiti Relief Fund. Also, if we do more fund raisers I will most likely participate.
I always bring in books and anything borrowed from the library. I bring back chapter books, picture books, encyclopedias, even magazines because all children should have the opportunity to read.
Sometime this year I might bring in an electric pencil sharpener for my class and other children in Mrs. DiSanto’s class after my class leaves. This just might make our school a little better.

Legacy

My legacy is that I could help with recycling duty. People on recycling duty go around the school getting all the recycling bins. Then they go to the cafeteria and give the recycling bins to the custodian so he can bring the recycling to a recycling plant. Then when the kids leave this
school they are remembered for helping the school and the planet. That’s how I want to be remebered.

My Legacy

I will make my school a better place by doing fund rasers like the Reach for the Stars to get more books for our school library and ourselves because reading books can be humorous, serious, and they can teach you a lesson like do not lie in any circumstances.
I can also donate some money for more field  trips and give box tops for whatever the school needs them for. I would like to have more food drives for people in Haiti and Africa because in Haiti there was a very bad earthquake there and the people there don't have a lot of food or water, and in Africa they have not had a lot of food or water and even shelter for a long time now.
The last thing I could do to help my school is to clean up all around it, like picking up all the trash around it. I would do that because if people think our school is good they might participate in some activities and that would be a wonderful thing.

My Legacy

When I`m at Highland School I want to try to make a legacy. I want to do as many fund raisers as I can and get more slupplies for school and
more books for the library so people can enjoy them at the library. Also, I could get more stuff for Art, Health, Gym, Technology, and Music.
Another thing I can do while I`m at Highland School is I can pick up stuff in the boys` bathroom like I could pick up the paper towels that
don`t get thrown away so the boys` bathroom will be clean when Mr. ManFredi comes to check the boys` bathroom.
A final thing I can do for Highland School is I could make the school look better by planting more flowers to make the school a better place. I will also make sure no one will destroy the flowers. That`s a legacy and I will try to stick to it.
