Title One is a federal aid program for schools. The goal of Title One is to ensure a high-quality education for every child, by providing extra help to students who need it most. Title One money is distributed to school districts and individual schools based on the number of low-income families.
Franklin Avenue qualifies for a school wide Title One program. This means all students benefit from parts of the program.

The Title One services offered at Franklin Avenue are:
Reading Assistance from a Title One Reading Specialist
A summer reading program, partially funded by Title One
Title One students receive monthly issues of Recipes for Success and Reading Connection publications
Quarterly newsletter for Title One families for information on the program, helpful hints, and upcoming events
Reading Recovery
Team Teaching training
Parent Advisory Council to keep you informed and involved in the program
Development of a Literacy Library
Primary and Intermediate Literacy Collaborative K -5
Math Assistance from a Title One Math Specialist
Family, parent, and student activities to promote literacy, sponsored by PAC

READ TO ROVER Program

Our fourth year providing the READ TO ROVER program celebrates the opportunity for 15 students to participate. The students are selected by their Grade 1-5 teacher.

This program gives children the opportunity to read to a trained pedriatic dog and the dog's trainer for 15 minutes two times every other week during the school day. The children get the chance to read and interact with a dog and trainer team who have been certified and trained to listen to children read and offer positive feedback. The idea is that the animal inteaction increases motivation to read.

The pediatric dogs have all necessary shots and have extensive training in working with children. The adult trainers have gone through the Volunteers in Public Schools screening process and are cleared to work at Franklin Avenue School. We thank Westfield resident, Melissa Kielbasa of Sandy Meadow Farm, for spearheading the program here at Franklin.

Lesley University’s literature on Literacy Collaborative

The Literacy Collaborative provides a research-based instructional model that is student-centered, language-based, and process-oriented. The model uses research-based methods of instruction while focusing on the complex skills and strategies of reading, writing, and oral language. In addition, Literacy Collaborative assures an efficient, effective safety net for the lowest achieving first graders by requiring Reading Recovery, along with other high quality interventions, as part of the comprehensive approach.
